OVERVIEW

PERU BIRDING – LUCRE - HUACARPAY WETLAND

CUSCO - HUARCARPAY LAGOON - LUCRE VALLEY - CUSCO

Between 5 and 5:30 am we pick you up from your hotel. Then, we go in our transport to the Laguna de Huacarpay, an ideal place for bird watching. It is very important to arrive early because waterfowl and high Andean birds leave their nests at this time to feed in the middle of the lagoon.

Upon arrival, we walk to the first hidden viewpoint, there we can observe birds and take photos without disturbing them. Likewise, we will be able to observe aquatic and high Andean birds. For example, common sapling (Rollandia Rolland), torrent ducks (Merganetta armata), Chilean flamingos (Phoenicopterus chilenis), puna ibis (Plegadis Ridgwayi), American moorhen (Gallinula galeata), Andean gulls (Chroicocephalus serranus), etc.

Then, we eat our box breakfast on the shores of the lagoon. Next, we move to the southwest side of the lagoon to look for a unique hummingbird: the Bearded Mountaineer (Oreonympha nobilis). This hummingbird can only be found in Peru and the high altitude subtropical scrub around the lagoon suits it. In addition to that, we can observe the giant hummingbird (Patagona gigas), the largest of the hummingbirds. Another typical bird of the area is the multicolored reed tyrant (Tachuris rubrigastra), a small perching South American bird that belongs to the tyrant flycatcher family.

Later, we get back on the transport to travel for 20 minutes to the Lucre Valley. It is a special place to observe the American Eagle Owl (Bubo virginianus). After all these incredible experiences, we return to the city of Cusco, arriving there around 12:00 p.m. m. At the end of the tour we take you back to the city of Cusco.
